SSNT Australian Football 12’s Championships - Round 5
SSNT Australian Football 12’s Championships
Match Review
Round Five V NSW
NT 11.8.74 def NSW 2.3.15
NSW came out all fired up to create the upset and leave three of the 12’s teams tied for third on two wins. By half way through the quarter the NT boys had started to stamp their authority on the game and continued in that vain through to the final siren.
As a result this group of boys have equaled our previously best result at the championships of three wins and finishing third. Taking nothing away from the SA game effort but a couple of extra points or bounces of the ball falling our way on that day would have seen us finish second for the tournament.
Shane McAuliffe and Laurie Donation still managed to dominate their opponents, both boys earned the respect of their peers and officials for their efforts over the week. Michael Coombes was strong once again and showed his class throughout the match. Daniel Simpson played all five games at fullback and was without doubt the outstanding fullback of the 12’s competition.
Kyle Emery started scratchy but kicked into gear and provided some good attack on the footy and some good run and carry. Nakia Cockatoo was probably the only player within the centre square area that did not appear to have run out of puff. He won plenty of footy across the half back line and then again when moved on to the ball.
Brandon Parfitt continued his Mr. Consistent approach to the week with another quality four quarter performance. Daly Shannon and Liam Moseley continued to keep working hard and ensured there was hard attack on the footy whenever it was in their area. A very pleasing aspect for the pair of them was their ability to play to position and ensure that NSW struggled to get the footy past half way.
Keidan Holt kicked a lazy 4 goals for the day, once again he went onto the ball halfway through the third quarter and into the final term and relieved a bit of pressure for the boys who played on ball for most of the week.
Jake Turner-Long first comment when he arrived at the ground on Saturday morning was that he was feeling great which was great for him as he was able to finish off the week on a high note with plenty of touches across both half forward and half back.
Cameron Piening was asked to get more physical for the last game and he showed that it can be a part of his game with a couple of good contested marks and hard ball gets.
The pleasing thing about the final round was also that there were plenty of others that put their hand up and contributed. Daniel Rioli nailed a couple of good goals, Shanley Malbunka worked hard in the forward line and provided plenty of opportunities. Jack Munkara produced a couple of moments that nearly earned him his first goal for the week. Ben Long did some good stuff across half forward and provided some good shepherds to release team mates to advantage. Jordan Jeffrey was a good player in each game, his confidence built across the week and read the play well on most occasions which enabled him to provide a couple of last line clearances. Zane Carter worked hard to win the footy and do the hard stuff, it was a credit to him that he didn’t give up at any stage, his highlight coming in round one with his two goals. Lachlan McKenzie had some good moments and showed his ability, he too grew in confidence over the week.
Keenan Waterbury got in amongst it on a few occasions and certainly built in confidence as the week unfolded. Ezekiel Frank also contributed throughout the game and he to looked comfortable out on the ground throughout the week. Shaun Daniels provided some highlights on occasions and did some good work off the last line of defence.

Round Four V QLD
NT 6.9.45 def QLD 5.4.34
It was always expected to be a hard game, the boys have played two extremely tough matches against Vic and SA over the past 4 days and the bodies were sore and tired. The QLD boys looked as if they had saved themselves to have a red hot go at us to give them their second win of the tournament. Leading at ¼ time and ½ time, but not convincingly, the big boys, who had given so much so far, were tiring. ¾ time saw QLD in front and it was going to take something pretty big for us to get back on top.
A couple of positional changes at ¾ time gave us the spark to finish off and take the game. Laurie Donation kicked 2 badly needed 4th quarter goals and Shanley Malbunka also chipped in to see us win the final quarter convincingly.
Shane McAuliffe and Laurie Donation were showing the signs of their big game efforts earlier in the week and did things to assist the team but were not as damaging. Michael Coombes also looked flat in comparison to the earlier games but still provided assistance and Daniel Simpson continued to be the rock on the last line. All four of these boys will enjoy the rest before we take on NSW on Saturday.
Kyle Emery provided some much needed spark when put on the ball and ensured the footy made it into our forward line plenty of time in the last quarter. Nakia Cockatoo was consistent from start to finish, his efforts in defence kept us in the game and when moved onto the ball in the last quarter he worked even harder to make sure the footy went into attack.
Brandon Parfitt has been Mr. Consistent across all the games and put in another good four quarter performance. Daly Shannon and Liam Moseley continued to keep working hard and ensured there was hard attack on the footy whenever it was in their area.
Keidan Holt kicked a couple of goals, and had another couple of close misses. Probably his best contribution was when he was put on the ball in the last quarter and ensured the footy got delivered deep into Laurie Donation at every opportunity. Shanley Malbunka put his hand up for a couple of goals that were badly needed. His improvement in each game has been well noted.
Others did jobs at times around the ground but it was certainly a day when we didn’t have individual stand out performances as where seen against VIC when we lost by 10 goals and SA on Wednesday, the group certainly stood up in those big games. One more game to go, the boys are tired but they have a chance to take out third spot if they can beat NSW on Saturday.

Round Three V SA
SA 5.4.34 def NT 4.9.33
What can you say, a game that we dominated possession in, had more inside 50’s, more tackles, more hard ball gets and contested marks. Unfortunately for the boys we were just shy a little bit of that big game experience and in the end that cost us a against the odds win. The game had everything, controversy, a Simo claimed rushed behind that was awarded a goal, an amazing under pressure goal from our youngest player and mark on the siren inside 50 that gave us a chance to win the match.
Shane McAuliffe gave it everything for the entire match and having to keep that up for four quarters was always a big ask. Laurie Donation was tireless and just wanted to be involved regardless of his energy levels. Daniel Simpson was a rock on the last line, taking some spectacular marks against a very good overhead marking team.
Michael Coombes did not stop for the entire match and just pushed on to the very end. Kyle Emery tackled ferociously and won plenty of football. Jake Turner-Long still recovering from illness, still managed to win some footy and set up some plays.
Nakia Cockatoo continued to dominate across the half back line and late in the last quarter was switched onto the ball, which resulted in a run, carry and deep kick that Zac Bailey made the most of bringing us back to 1 point down.
Brandon Parfitt was inspirational with his in an under efforts, continuously wanting the football regardless of his opponent size and taking some good contested marks. Zac Bailey continued to be the opportunist crumbing off the back of a pack and running hard across the front of goals to put us back to within a point.
Jack Munkara once again had the opportunity to show that Tiwi magic in the forward line and is so close to snaring that first goal for the carnival. Daly Shannon worked hard and won his share of contested football, never shy of attacking the football when ever the opportunity was provided. Liam Moseley continued to do good things on the wing and improving on his responsibilities.
Daniel Rioli had a couple of opportunities to show his flair and did so with a nice lead up and overhead mark. Keidan Holt continued to be our main forward and kicked a couple of crucial goals, while also missing a couple. His game was always played as a contest against the odds but he still managed to take some good pack grabs. With the help of another key forward the result may have gone our way.
Shanley Malbunka is really starting to show us why he was selected in the squad, his hard lead up work provided him with many opportunities to mark inside 50. Lachlan McKenzie got into the game and did some good things, probably the team highlight being in the last quarter when he saved a certain score on the last line and kicked the footy back outside our defensive 50.
Ben Long did some good stuff early on receiving a war injury after a head clash with an opponent. Keenan Waterbury, Ezekiel Frank, Jordan Jeffrey, Shaun Daniels and Zane Taylor had their moments in the game and were good team players throughout the contest providing efforts that reduced the effectiveness of the opposition on numerous occasions. Cameron Piening pulled up ill and spent the last three quarters of the match on the bench.

His final quarter on the ball provided increased scoring opportunities.

Zac Bailey once again showed up during the match and kicked two goals, once again declaring his future capabilities. Jack Munkara had a couple of opportunities to show that Tiwi magic in the forward line and is not far off from snaring a few himself.
Daly Shannon while on the wing mostly, played team footy that enabled us to increase scoring opportunities, his pressure to ensure the football remained in our forward line was excellent. Daniel Rioli gained confidence in his second game and provided support around the forward line that assisted in scoring opportunities.
Keidan Holt spent a few hours in hospital after the Vic game getting a finger x-ray as a precaution and was played as a forward pocket. His strong marking and contested ball enabled him to pick up 4 goals for the match, which could have been a larger tally only for a couple of slips in accuracy.
Jake Turner-Long was unable to play due to illness. His efforts to play against Victoria the previous day were massive. He watched the match from the sidelines before heading back to his billets to sleep and recover for Wednesdays match against SA.
Goal Scorers: Keidan Holt-Tubbs (4), Liam Moseley (3), Zac Bailey (2), Cameron Piening (1), Michael Coombes (1), Kyle Emery (1) and Ben Long (1)

Round One V Victoria
Vic 10.15.75 def NT 2.2.14
The score line of 10 goals did not represent the intensity that the boys played at, they showed great determination against a powerful team who would have deemed the win not to their expectations, having accounted for us in last years encounter by 20+ goals.
Shane McAuliffe was great in defence and turned possessions into attack on many occasions. His attack on the footy was consistently hard, which enabled him to gain many possessions.
Laurie Donation stood out around the ground, he took some spectacular marks and his second and third efforts earned him praises from around the ground.
Daniel Simpson was a solid defender who showed that he was capable of competing at the level successfully. His last line punches, marks and rushes enabled us to build an attack from the last line.
Michael Coombes was an aggressive centre man who controlled the opposition as well as gaining plenty of possessions.
Kyle Emery, did a great job of creating attacking moves and he regularly made position to win the football.
Jake Turner-Long provided some magic around the ground. His tackling was an inspiration, his decision making provided opportunities and his agility enabled him to better his opposition on many occasions.
Nakia Cockatoo was aggressive at the footy, he created attacking opportunities and provided defence, the majority of his possessions were to advantage.
Brandon Parfitt showed talent and ability and was not hesitant when attack on the ball was required.
Zane Carter ended up in attack replacing an injured player and provided 10 minutes of football that saw him kick 2 goals. One from a good lead and mark, one from an opportunistic gather in front and snap.
Zac Bailey had minimal game time, but entered the arena on one occasion and showed what power he will have in the future by running to a vacant flank, marking a pass, followed by a run and carry (1 bounce) followed by a delivery directly into the hotspot.
Shanley Malbunka, tried hard all day leading at full forward but did not get the opportunities he desired.
The Exchange boys line up against ACT today (Monday 27th July) on the big main oval. The team is looking at applying that same intensity and hoping that success will result.
The Championship boys went down in a close one to NSW. NSW kicked away a couple of times and the NT boys kept hitting back but could not quite get close enough to take control of the game. The boys get to play VIC Country in round two who overrun VIC Metro in round one. More on this game will be posted when Coaches report is provided
